The Chicago Tribune runs the headline: “Dewey Defeats Truman,” which turned out
to be not quite accurate.
In 1945, such a faux pas by the press was considered a major
embarrassment.
In 2011, the same error would be defended as the appropriate
opinion of journalists whose real responsibility is to mirror the feelings of
their viewers rather than degrade themselves with the musty academic facist
factism of the opposing side.
We’ve come a long way.
